Sequences 2012

The european auTomobile
manufacturers’ association (acea) has
published its european oil Sequences
2012, which define engine lubricant
quality requirements for gasoline
engines and light- and heavy-duty
diesel engines, and has included some
specific measures to address the impact
of biofuels for the first time.
The new sequences, which set
out the minimum performance
levels required of service-fill engine
lubricants, became available for first use
on december 14, 2012.
The 2012 sequences incorporate
some significant changes, including
new testing requirements that
will impact the formulation and
development of engine lubricants
and the performance claims that
can be made for them. The majority
of changes relate to gasoline and
light-duty diesel engines but there are
also some changes to the heavy-duty
categories.
a series of new tests has been
introduced as a result of the growing
use of biofuels and problems already
encountered in the field as a result.
These issues mostly relate to the
accumulation of biofuel components
in the lubricant and their effect on
lubricant quality and performance.
acea has adopted new tests in
its 2012 sequences to deal with such
problems and guard against other
potential issues that could arise as a
result of the increasing use of biofuels
in the future.
aTiel has been actively engaged
with acea during the evolution of
the 2012 sequences and believes this
constructive interaction has made
an important contribution to their
development.
oil marketers may continue to
make new claims against the 2010
sequences until december 14, 2013,
after which every new claim has to
be made against the 2012 sequences.
existing engine lubricants using claims
against the 2010 sequences can be
marketed until december 22, 2014.

center for research and development in
india on January 17.
Spread over 10,000 square meters
in honda’s manesar facility, the center
employs 200 engineers from honda
research & development india (hrdi)
and hmSi associates.
The center houses an advanced
wind tunnel facility that simulates real-
world airflow to monitor aerodynamics
and its effect on vehicles to develop
fuel-efficient two-wheelers.
Traditionally, honda r&d
operates as a separate entity across
all motorcycle, automobile and
power product divisions globally.
undertaking a major paradigm shift,
the new technical center is a first step
by honda towards a new form of
global operations. The new technical
center combines an integrated
system of design, engineering, bop/
purchasing and quality (debQ) under
one roof, to create a globally optimized
operating system that advances
local development of higher quality
products at low cost.
“we are committed to deliver
faster development of products of
highest quality with low cost drawing
efficiencies from r&d, designing,
engineering, purchasing and quality
under one roof for the first time,” said
atsushi amataka, hrdi president.
honda also launched its honda
eco technology across its activa,
aviator and dio lines, making them the
most fuel-efficient automatic scooters
in india, according to the company.
The new technology boosts the
fuel efficiency of honda’s automatic
scooters by a further 11% to 60
kilometers per liter.

ground breaking ceremony at its joint
venture base oil plant in daesan, South
Korea, on January 22.
The joint venture, hyundai and Shell
base oil co. ltd. (hSb), will manage the
commissioning, start-up and operation
of the plant. hdo will own 60% of the
JV, Shell 40%.

by mid-2014, the plant will produce
650,000 tons of group ii base oils
annually. The plant will significantly
increase base oil supply across the
region, including china.
