such as the absence of compre-
hensive data gathered through
actual use and observation over
time.
Efforts are continuing in
this area. So far, there have been
positive results. The bar graph in
figure 2 compares two market-
leading brands of conventional
lubricants with an EAL in terms
of oxidation times.
Such improvements would
slowly and steadily bring EALs
as the preferred choice, and over
time, the acceptance of bio-lubri-
cants could become more wide-
spread and extend beyond the
mandatory regime in U.S. waters
and the VGP requirements.

Summary
The latest version of the VGP
is a welcome step in the area of
marine pollution control and
beneficial for the environment as
a whole. It’s also worth noting that
the EPA has taken into account
some of the practical difficulties as-
sociated with the changeover from
conventional lubricants to EALs
instantly, so they have drawn out a
reasonable time frame for existing
vessels by allowing them to do
the required changes at the next
drydock. They have also exempted
cases where use of such oils is
technically infeasible and proper
explanation can be given for the
same to the authorities concerned.
Finally, it can be said that the
new VGP is certainly an improve-
ment over the earlier version, and
there should be a gradual effort in
raising the benchmarks of pollu-
tion prevention and control across
all nations and continents. This
would help to heighten awareness
about the use of biolubricants in
the marine sector.
