variants to meet Emission Control Area
(ECA) legislation. The journey is just be-
ginning with regards to the awareness and
understanding of how the variety of fuels
can work together onboard.
ExxonMobil will explore and explain
some of the properties of the fuel that
impact the stability and compatibility of
different products.
Understanding these properties will
become increasingly important due to the
growing number of fuel products coming to
the market, which are designed to meet the
demand for ECA compliance. These “new”
products are inevitably going to become
comingled in-use as vessels transit in and
out of the ECA areas.
However this knowledge and experience
remains just as vital in operations today,
as the source and quality of fuel can vary
hugely. For example, two regular sulphur
380 cSt fuels, purchased from different sup-
pliers in different geographical locations,
can display very different characteristics.
Operators will need to understand
the implications of the various products’
stability in storage as well as their compati-
bility when mixing or comingling fuels of a
different nature.
Being aware of, and understanding the
chemistry of the fuels, in addition to the
optimum handling and treatment of fuels
onboard, are all critical factors in ensuring
the safe operation of vessels.
Ken Lim is the AP logistics
advisor at ExxonMobil and is

bunker delivery operations. In
this role, Ken is involved in
developing logistical support for the
introduction of 2015 ECA fuels in the Asia
Pacific region. He also played an instrumental
role in the successful development of the
SingaporeMass FlowMeter System. In
addition, he has held a variety of positions in
sales, logistics and operations.
Ken graduated fromNanyang Technolog-
ical University of Singapore with a degree in
engineering, and he has aMaster of Business
Administration degree fromSingaporeMan-
agement University.

The global lubricants industry is in
the midst of tremendous changes with
regards to regionally diverse market
developments in terms of quality and
quantity aspects as well as with regards to
the competitive landscapes.
Nowadays, lubricants demand also de-
pends to a large extent on customer- and
market-driven sustainability aspects on
the raw material and the finished product
side.
The main objective of this paper is to
take a closer look at the development of
the global and regional lube markets of
the past decade, with a specific focus on
Asia-Pacific, including potential correla-
tion with macroeconomic indicators.
Forecasts on country-specific lube market
developments will be highlighted as
well as relevant sustainability trends and
challenges.
For 15 years Apu Gosalia
