Hyundai Oilbank Co., South
Korea’s fourth-largest refiner, entered
the lubricant market with its launch of
XTeer. The refiner said it will produce
some 180,000 barrels of engine oil by
next year.
The local lubricant market is esti-
mated at KRW2.5 trillion won (USD2.2
billion), with local refiners such as SK,
S-Oil Corp. and GS Caltex holding a
combined market share of 45%.
Hyundai Oilbank started work on
the construction of a plant to produce
base oils in January, in partnership
with Shell. The plant to be built in Dae-
san, a coastal city southwest of Seoul,
will have a production capacity of
20,000 barrels per day. Earlier this year,
Hyundai Oilbank and Shell established
a joint venture to build and operate
the plant, with Hyundai holding a 60%
stake in the company.

Refinery will be expanding its Group II
EHC base stock production capacity in
Jurong Island, the company announced.
The additional capacity is expected to be
available by early 2015.
“Expanding production of our EHC
base stocks will help our customers
capitalize on their new growth opportuni-
ties in the Asia Pacific region,”said Ken
Chandler, manager of Asia Pacific base
stock sales.
The expansion project will use Exxon-
Mobil proprietary technologies, including
MSDWdewaxing catalyst, to increase
production of EHC Group II base stocks.
Earlier this year, ExxonMobil an-
nounced plans to expand EHC base
stock production capacity at its refinery
in Baytown, Texas, where construction is
scheduled to be complete by early 2015.
“These two expansion projects dem-
onstrate ExxonMobil’s commitment to the
base stocks market and will enable us to
significantly increase global supply of our
high-quality EHC base stocks,”said George
W. Arndt, Jr., manager of global basestocks
& specialties.

Chevron (Thailand) has
announced the appointment of
Salman Saadat as country chairman
and general manager for products
effective Aug. 1.
Saadat, who holds a master’s
degree in business administration
from the Institute of Business Admin-
istration in Karachi, Pakistan, joined
Caltex in 1990 as the zone manager/
marketing specialist and has held
positions of increasing responsibil-
ity in marketing and lubricants in
numerous countries.
He comes to Thailand from his
former position as Chevron’s area
business manager for the Asia-Pacific
region.

Gevo resumes isobutanol
production

Gevo, Inc. announced that it
has resumed commercial production of
isobutanol at its Luverne, Minn., U.S.A.
plant in single trainmode, successfully
utilizing its proprietary Gevo Integrated
Fermentation Technology® (GIFT®).
Production was temporarily halted
last year due to microbial contamination
issues at the facility.
“We plan to be producing isobutanol
and operating throughout the rest of this
year. While we are currently operating
a single production train, we plan on
bringing all of our fermenters and GIFT®
systems online in the third and fourth
quarters, testing run rates, then ramping
up production and sales in 2013 and 2014,”
said CEO Patrick Gruber.
The Gevo plant is currently the only
plant that produces isobutanol from
renewable materials. It uses corn as
feedstock. Gevo will sell the isobutanol
it produces in a variety of specialized
markets.
The company is headquartered in
Englewood, Colo., U.S.A.
