The rollout of ILSAC
GF-6 and PC-11 may slip by three
to six months, but officially, as of late
summer, everything was still on track
for these new automotive lubricant
specifications.
The licensing date for PC-11, for
heavy-duty diesel engine oils, was Jan.
1, 2016. The corresponding date for
GF-6, for gasoline-fueled passenger
cars, was Sept. 30, 2016. Use will be
mandated a year or so after licensing.
The two specifications share a
common reason for a possible delay:
new tests under development. Some
new tests are updates to old ones,
driven by the need to replace obsolete
with current hardware. Other tests
under development are completely
novel, being created to reveal new
lube properties and thereby offer
additional ways to distinguish good
motor oils from bad.

The test development process can
be slow and expensive, particularly if
the tests are brand new or there are a
lot of them. Both circumstances apply
to GF-6.
