Navigating the road to
ultra-low-viscosity
ENGINE OILS
From April 8–10, SAE
International held its
World Congress in
Detroit, Mich., U.S.A.
Part of the program
was an open forum on
low-viscosity engine
oils. Five speakers
from different areas of
the lubricants indus-
try gave presentations
on low viscosity, each
offering their perspec-
tives on recent devel-
opments and trends.
The speakers included:
Mike Brown, vice president of Technology
at SK Lubricants Americas;
Greg Guinther, technical advisor for Afton
Chemical Corporation;
John Cruz, fluids engineer at Detroit Diesel;
Masashi Maruyama, chief engineer at
Honda R&D Co., Ltd.; and
Ken Chao, staff engineer at John Deere.
Brown kicked off the presentations by
speaking about the SAE J300 standard. He
went on to talk about a new engine oil viscos-
ity grade, SAE 16. SAE 16 was introduced
to the market in April 2013 in response to
a request from the International Lubricant
Standardization and Approval Committee
