on Industrial biotechnology and
bioenergy held in Vancouver,
Canada, last October, had speakers
across different industries and
countries discuss jet biofuels as a
key towards improving sustainability. Accord-
ing to Sean Newsum, boeing Commercial Air-
lines’ regional director, environmental strategy,
public surveys show that most people believe
the aviation industry accounts for anywhere
between 10 and 30% of carbon dioxide (CO
2
)
emissions—much higher than its actual contri-
bution of 2%.
despite the industry’s relatively small CO
2
emission levels, boeing still wants to make sure
that this 2% is minimized. Appropriate action
needs to be taken to prevent this number from
growing, Newsum pointed out. “Aggressive
steps need to be taken to reduce the industry’s
carbon footprint,” he added.
boeing has adopted a three-pillar strategy
centered on three key goals. The company’s
goals are to: 1) realize a 1.5% gain in fuel ef-
ficiency per year, up to 2020; 2) maintain carbon
neutral growth from 2020 onwards; and, 3)
realize a 50% decrease in CO
2
emissions relative
to 2005, by the year 2050.
Newsum elaborated on boeing’s three
pillars, the first of which is to invest in more
efficient aircraft, which according to the regional
director is “the imperative for airlines and
manufacturers.” The ever-increasing global
awareness regarding climate change will provide
an impetus for the aviation industry to invest
not only in more fuel-efficient planes, but also in
operating those planes more efficiently.
This second pillar can be realized through
maximizing carrying capacity, minimizing
the fuel planes use and modernizing air traffic
control systems. Lastly, boeing recognizes that
while the other two pillars can help, there also
needs to be an exploration of something differ-
ent. Newsum believes that biofuels are the solu-
tion to this problem. boeing views this process
as the first step in a “longer term play” towards
adopting more sustainable practices within the
industry. Their goal is not to see biofuels used in
(Bio Pacific Rim Sum-
mit on Industrial Biotechnology andBioenergy)
Newsum
Newsum
