Singapore never ceases to impress me.

The awesomeness of the structure built for the Singapore Formula One race is quite
impressive, considering that it is entirely temporary. Billed as the only Formula One night race, it
is also one of only two street races.
作为一个完全临时性的结构，新加坡一级方程式赛车的赛道结构简直妙极了。据说这是唯
一的一级方程式夜间赛道，也是少有的双街道赛道之一。
Talking to Ian Albiston, Shell’s tracksidemanager, I was evenmore impressed at the
logistics that each team that participates in the race has to replicate 19 times a year (20 times
next year). For the Ferrari team, which Shell sponsors, Shell has to ship 1,400 litres of special fuel
for each race fromHamburg, Germany, which then have to be chilled before they can be used.
Needless to say, the lubricants that go into those engines are bespoke as well. For each race,
Shell sends five 20-kilo packs of lubricants, which have to be heated before they are used. The
motor oil that goes into the Ferrari Formula One engines is“off the charts,”of SAE J300, which is
used worldwide to classify engine oils in terms of viscosity grade. A thicker oil is used during the
practice run, where engines near the end of their life are used, to providemore protection and
a thinner oil during the actual competition.

I also had the opportunity to visit Shell’s lab, which travels with the teamat all the races.
Every 91 kilometres or 21 laps, the engine oil is drained and tested for usedmetals. As Albiston
said, Formula One is a“never-ending 365-day R&D.”
我还有机会参观了壳牌的实验室，该实验室在所有比赛场合都伴随车队左右。赛车每跑91
公里或21圈，就要排干发动机油，检测其中的废金属含量。正如Albiston所说，一级方程式是“一
