Ultrascale and Cargill partner to enhance data centre sustainability
Ultrascale Digital Infrastructure (UDI) has partnered with Cargill to introduce an innovative, plant-based cooling solution for data centres. This collaboration integrates Cargill’s NatureCool™ 2000 immersion cooling liquid with Ultrascale’s patented cooling technology to significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of data centre operations.
UDI is a company focused on innovative cooling solutions for data centres. Founded in 2022 and led by CEO Arnold Magcale, UDI combines vertical immersion cooling and Rack-Door Heat Exchanger (RDHx) technologies. These solutions aim to significantly reduce energy and water usage while increasing data centre density and efficiency. The company’s mission is to support the growing demands of AI and high-power GPUs with sustainable infrastructure. UDI has recently partnered with Cargill to incorporate plant-based cooling solutions.
Innovative cooling technology
The partnership aims to revolutionise data centre cooling by leveraging Cargill’s biodegradable, renewable NatureCool™ 2000 liquid. This coolant is made from plant-based resources and is engineered to be compatible with various electronics and components. Its high flash point provides enhanced fire safety compared to synthetic coolants. When combined with Ultrascale’s patented immersion cooling technology, which can cool more than 300 kilowatts per rack without using water, the result is a more efficient and eco-friendly cooling solution.
The new cooling system is expected to reduce data centre energy use by more than 50%, eliminate water waste, and remove the need for toxic chemicals typically used in traditional cooling methods. This advancement supports the decarbonisation goals of the data centre industry and aligns with the increasing demand for sustainable technology solutions.
Arnold Magcale, founder and CEO of Ultrascale Digital Infrastructure, emphasised the transformative potential of this partnership. “We’ve proven that liquid immersion cooling is the most high-performing, cost-efficient and sustainable solution for data centre operations, but incorporating Cargill’s NatureCool™ 2000 immersion cooling liquid with Ultrascale’s patent-pending cooling technology will transcend the industry to a higher level,” he said.
Global Power Systems Director for Cargill’s Bioindustrial business, Javi McGuiggan, highlighted the importance of such collaborations. “Cargill has a unique position to supply the world with value added, nature-derived chemistries, but it is through partnerships like the one with Ultrascale, as an expert in this industry, that we truly bring solutions to life,” McGuiggan said.
The partnership addresses the urgent need for more sustainable data centre operations, particularly as AI technology drives higher power demands. By 2030, AI chips are expected to consume up to 25% of all electricity used in the United States, making innovative cooling solutions essential.
