Toyota to develop Lexus BEVs and batteries in Shanghai

Toyota Motor Corporation has announced a comprehensive partnership with the Shanghai municipal government to advance carbon neutrality in China. As part of this initiative, the Japanese automaker will establish a wholly owned subsidiary in Shanghai’s Jinshan District to develop and manufacture battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and batteries.

Toyota’s agreement aligns with China’s objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, with a focus on hydrogen energy, automated driving technology, and battery recycling. By establishing a dedicated subsidiary, Toyota aims to expedite the supply of new energy vehicles that cater to growing consumer demand.

Lexus BEV production from 2027

The new subsidiary will develop a BEV under the Lexus brand, with production scheduled to commence in 2027. The facility will have an initial production capacity of 100,000 units per year and is expected to generate approximately 1,000 new jobs in its early phase.

Toyota has a long-standing presence in China through collaborations with China FAW Group Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. The company remains committed to working alongside partners to create a sustainable and prosperous future, in line with its philosophy of “producing happiness for all.”
