TotalEnergies and Air Products partner to supply green hydrogen
TotalEnergies and Air Products have entered a groundbreaking 15-year agreement for the annual supply of 70,000 tons of green hydrogen to decarbonise TotalEnergies’ European refineries starting in 2030. This significant deal is the first long-term contract following TotalEnergies’ call for tenders aimed at sourcing 500,000 tons of green hydrogen per year.
The green hydrogen, supplied from Air Products’ global network, will be delivered directly to TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe. This initiative is expected to avoid approximately 700,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, marking a crucial step towards TotalEnergies’ goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas operations (Scope 1+2) by 40% by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.
Pioneering the energy transition
Air Products, a global leader in hydrogen supply, has committed more than USD15 billion to large-scale energy transition projects, solidifying its role as a leading and reliable supplier of low-carbon hydrogen. “This deal with Air Products is a stepping stone towards our goal of decarbonising the hydrogen used in TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe by the end of the decade,” said Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “We are proud to partner with Air Products, a pioneer in low carbon hydrogen production, and contribute to the emergence of a green hydrogen industry.”
In addition to the green hydrogen agreement, TotalEnergies and Air Products have signed a memorandum of understanding for the supply of renewable power. This includes a first Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 150 MW from a solar project in the U.S. state of Texas, with plans to explore further PPA opportunities in the UK, Poland, and France. This collaboration aligns with TotalEnergies’ integrated electricity strategy and supports Air Products’ decarbonisation roadmap.
TotalEnergies is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint across its operations. By transitioning to green hydrogen, the company aims to cut CO2 emissions by approximately five million tons per year by 2030. The 2023 call for tenders for 500,000 tons of green hydrogen annually is part of TotalEnergies’ strategy to achieve full decarbonisation of the hydrogen used in its European refineries.
