TotalEnergies acquires Finnish lubricant re-refining specialist Tecoil
TotalEnergies has announced the acquisition of Tecoil, a Finnish company specialising in the production of re-refined base oils (RRBOs). Tecoil operates a state-of-the-art facility in Hamina, Finland, capable of processing 50,000 tons of used oil annually. This facility employs an advanced re-refining process to produce base oils of comparable quality to virgin oils, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of lubricants while meeting high-performance standards.
The integration of Tecoil into TotalEnergies will enable the company to accelerate the use of RRBOs in its high-end lubricants, such as the newly launched Quartz EV3R for passenger vehicles and Rubia EV3R for trucks. These products are designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable and high-performance lubricants, aligning with TotalEnergies’ commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.
Pierre Duhot, senior vice-president of Lubricants and Specialties at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. “The integration of Tecoil into TotalEnergies will allow us to accelerate the use of RRBOs in the production of our high-end lubricants to meet our customers’ growing demand for increasingly high-performance, environmentally friendly products. We are delighted to welcome the Tecoil teams and combine their know-how in base oil processing with TotalEnergies’ recognized expertise in the production and distribution of lubricants,” said Duhot.
Juha Kokko, CEO of Tecoil, also highlighted the benefits of this collaboration. “Joining TotalEnergies is a great satisfaction and an opportunity to strengthen and develop the activities of Tecoil. It will allow us to jointly build on our work, knowledge, and development of the lubricant sector and meet the new challenges and ambitions of our customers,” Kokko said.
With this strategic acquisition, TotalEnergies aims to expand its footprint in the sustainable lubricants market, leveraging Tecoil’s expertise and innovative technology to enhance its product offerings and support a circular economy. The company’s extensive global network, comprising 42 lubricant production sites, positions it as a key player in the automotive, industrial, and marine markets, providing innovative products and services worldwide.
