Sinopec expands Zhenhai Refinery, China’s largest petrochemical base
Sinopec, officially known as China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, has announced the completion of the second-phase expansion of its Zhenhai Refinery, solidifying its position as the largest petrochemical industrial base in China. With this milestone, the Zhejiang Ningbo Petrochemical Industrial Base achieves a total refining capacity exceeding 50 million tonnes annually.
Located in the Yangtze River Delta, this state-of-the-art industrial base includes 18 advanced production units such as atmospheric distillation, catalytic cracking, and polypropylene facilities, with a total investment of CNY41.6 billion (USD5.7 billion). The expanded facility aims to produce approximately eight million tonnes of petrochemical products annually, supporting industries such as automotive, home appliances, and textiles, while generating trillions of yuan in industrial value.
The project incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including a fully localised industrial operating system and an industrial internet platform for enhanced decision-making. It also boasts significant energy efficiency improvements, reducing energy consumption by 11.7%. With more than 90 million accident-free man-hours during construction, the project sets a new safety benchmark.
Sinopec’s Zhenhai Refinery, a cornerstone of its global operations, continues to deliver innovations in petrochemical manufacturing, reinforcing China’s competitiveness in the global petrochemical sector.
