Shell launches carbon neutral gearbox oil

Shell has made its wind turbine gearbox oil, Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, carbon neutral.

Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, a synthetic wind turbine oil with world-leading filtration technology, helps to lessen gear and bearing damage, while delivering exceptional lubrication performance, increased efficiency, and improving the reliability of the gearbox.

The oil comes with a 10-year warranty which means that the gearbox requires only on oil change, rather than the industry average of two during the turbine’s lifecycle.

Shell announced efforts to make the lubricant more sustainable during Wind Europe Offshore Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The companyโ€™s global portfolio of โ€œnature-basedโ€ carbon credits will compensate carbon dioxide emissions from the lifecycle of the gearbox oil.

Each carbon credit represents the avoidance or removal of greenhouse gases equivalent to a tonne of carbon dioxide.
