Repsol develops nanotechnology lubricants with Tekniker

Repsol has announced a collaboration with Tekniker, a prominent research centre in Éibar, Gipuzkoa, Spain, to develop innovative lubricants enhanced by nanotechnology. The partnership aims to create high-performance additives that can significantly reduce engine friction and promote fuel efficiency, aligning with the industry’s growing focus on sustainability.

The joint project revolves around the development of a zinc oxide nano additive functionalised with oleic acid. According to Tekniker’s research team, the additive not only enhances the stability of the lubricant but also improves its effectiveness in reducing mechanical friction. By incorporating the nano additive into conventional lubricating oil, friction levels were reduced by 14%, all while maintaining optimal protection against wear and tear.

Iker Elexpe, a researcher at Tekniker, highlighted the project’s potential to increase engine longevity and reduce energy consumption by lowering the resistance between moving components

Nanotechnology, with its precision at the molecular level, allows the development of next-generation lubricants with enhanced properties. Zinc oxide-based additives improve the efficiency of lubricants by minimising wear and reducing friction, contributing to lower fuel consumption and longer engine performance.

A zinc oxide (ZnO) nano additive functionalised with oleic acid is a type of advanced material where nano-sized particles of zinc oxide are chemically modified with oleic acid, a fatty acid commonly found in plant oils such as olive oil. This functionalisation serves multiple purposes, enhancing the stability, dispersibility, and performance of the nano additive in various applications.

Tekniker’s expertise in nanotechnology made it an essential partner in this endeavour. The research team explored various processes to optimise the dispersion and stability of the nano additive, ensuring it integrates effectively with conventional oils. Although the project is still in the experimental stage, the progress signals a promising shift towards more sustainable lubricant solutions.

This partnership aligns with Repsol’s broader strategy to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Beyond developing renewable fuels, Repsol is committed to reducing energy consumption by advancing lubricant technologies.

The company views lubricant innovation as an integral part of its transition to cleaner energy models, reinforcing its efforts to minimise environmental impact throughout the product life cycle.

While the results of the Repsol-Tekniker collaboration are promising, further research and testing are required before these nanotechnology-enhanced lubricants can enter the market. The transition from laboratory success to commercial adoption involves rigorous evaluations, including compatibility testing and regulatory compliance.

As industries increasingly seek sustainable solutions, innovations like these nanolubricants represent a significant step forward. If successfully deployed, these lubricants could transform automotive and industrial sectors by enhancing energy efficiency and reducing emissions.
