Pertamina unveils Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel X  with 10 PPM

Pertamina has officially introduced Diesel X, an ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel designed to support sustainability and fuel efficiency. Developed through PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) at the Balongan Refinery, this new fuel represents a significant step in Indonesia’s energy transition.

Simon Aloysius Mantiri, president director of Pertamina, stated that Diesel X reinforces Pertamina’s commitment to innovation and sustainability while aligning with the government’s vision for energy self-sufficiency under President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

“The launch of Diesel X addresses the challenge of energy resilience and self-sufficiency. This product not only delivers high performance but also enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions,” Mantiri said.

Diesel X is engineered to meet global demands for cleaner energy, making it an ideal solution for industries that rely on heavy-duty vehicles, such as the mining sector. With cutting-edge technology, the fuel minimises environmental impact while maintaining high efficiency.

Taufik Aditiyawarman, president director of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, highlighted that Diesel X is a testament to KPI’s commitment to delivering cleaner and more efficient energy.

“The Balongan Refinery has refined its production process to ensure Diesel X meets the highest quality and performance standards for diesel-engine vehicles and industrial sectors,” he explained.

Diesel X contains less than 10 parts per million (ppm) sulphur, aligning with EURO V emission standards. The refinery currently produces 200,000 barrels per month, with the first shipment of 52,000 barrels allocated to PT Freeport Indonesia’s industrial sector.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Pertamina’s vice president of Corporate Communication, emphasised that the fuel was developed through collaboration within the Pertamina Group. Research was conducted at the Pertamina Research, Technology and Innovation Laboratory, with production at Pertamina International Refinery and distribution through Pertamina Patra Niaga.

Diesel X is estimated to improve fuel efficiency by 7%, making it an attractive option for industries seeking sustainable energy solutions.

In addition to Diesel X, Pertamina also launched BBM Diesel B40 and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in January 2025. SAF, derived from used cooking oil (UCO), represents another milestone.

As a leader in Indonesia’s energy transition, Pertamina remains committed to achieving the 2060 Net Zero Emissions target through sustainable initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles.
