Pertamina NRE moves ahead with bioethanol plant in East Java
Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has taken a major step forward in its commitment to building a bioethanol plant, a crucial part of Indonesia’s energy transition strategy. The announcement was made following the signing of a cooperation agreement between Pertamina NRE, PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara (SGN), and the provincial government of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on September 5.
The plant, to be located in Glenmore, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, will produce bioethanol for various industries, including energy and transportation. It aims to process 30,000 litres of bioethanol per day, supporting the government’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and driving the use of renewable energy.
“This cooperation is a strategic step in our plan to develop bioethanol in Indonesia. We are optimistic that the collaboration between Pertamina NRE, SGN, and the NTT Provincial Government will have a positive impact on accelerating the national energy transition. Pertamina NRE has been focusing on new and renewable energy provision, including bioethanol,” said John Anis, the CEO of Pertamina NRE.
The collaboration with SGN and the provincial government aligns with Indonesia’s roadmap to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, as outlined in the country’s Presidential Regulation No. 40 of 2023.
The project will benefit the local community through job creation and the development of sustainable farming practices, particularly in NTT, which is rich in the agricultural resources needed for bioethanol production.
Pertamina NRE continues to partner with multiple stakeholders to accelerate the country’s shift toward renewable energy, with the bioethanol project expected to be a major part of this effort.
