OMV partners with Interzero for prime chemical recycling facility

Vienna, Austria-based energy conglomerate, OMV, has confirmed its plans to collaborate with Interzero, a forerunner in circular economy solutions, to construct and operate a cutting-edge chemical recycling sorting facility in Walldürn, Germany. This venture will see an investment surpassing EUR170 million (USD179.5 million) by OMV.

This novel establishment, slated to commence production by 2026, aims to process up to 260,000 tonnes of primarily non-recyclable mixed plastics annually. These plastics, commonly sourced from Germany’s yellow bag and bin recycling system, will be transformed into feedstock, which will then be used in OMV’s chemical recycling process.

The brainchild behind this chemical recycling methodology, known as the ReOil® technology, is OMV. This innovative process focuses on turning plastic waste, which can’t be recycled mechanically, into pyrolysis oil. This oil stands as a pivotal resource in the circular economy for plastics.

Dr. Alfred Stern, CEO of OMV, commented, “Our ambition aligns with leading the transition to sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials. The partnership with Interzero accentuates our commitment to crafting a sustainable circular economy for plastics.”

Dr. Axel Schweitzer, at the helm of Interzero, shared his vision of a waste-free world. He emphasised that chemical recycling could work hand-in-hand with mechanical recycling, suggesting the potential for a significant rise in Germany’s recycling rate. He added, “Our automated sorting plant steers us closer to utilise materials that were previously destined for incineration. Our objective is to amalgamate Interzero’s expertise in packaging and sorting with OMV’s prowess in chemical recycling.”

Currently, Interzero oversees the sorting of more than 800,000 metric tonnes of lightweight packaging waste annually in Germany. This record places them at the zenith of sorting capacity in Europe. The alliance between OMV and Interzero ensures a steady supply of top-notch feedstock for OMV’s chemical recycling, thereby completing the circle for plastics.

Furthermore, a new ReOil® plant, with an annual capacity of 16,000 tonnes, is being set up at OMV’s Schwechat location in Austria. This plant will carry the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS), affirming its adherence to global environmental and societal norms.
