Johnson Controls’ Large-scale Steam-driven Centrifugal Heat Pumps Receive Technology Award from Architectural Society of China
Working to improve air quality in China
SHANGHAI, Sept. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Johnson Controls was recently recognized for breakthrough in waste heat recovery technology again. Its large-scale steam-driven centrifugal heat pumps received the prestigious Science and Technology Award from the Architectural Society of China. Among the 93 organizations honored, Johnson Controls is the only one awarded for a facility — this demonstrates the proven, effective application of its heat pumps in a real-world setting. The award underscores the company's technology leadership as well as commitment to improving China's sustainability and air quality.
Johnson Controls' large-scale steam-driven centrifugal heat pumps — YORK® Titan™ Multi-Stage Centrifugal Heat Pump and YORK Dual Steam Turbine (YDST) Single-Stage Heat Pump — are technologically advanced:
- Each heat pump system can supply 100 megawatts, ideal for large-scale central heating applications.
- The heat pumps can accept waste hot water as low as 10 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius and increase the temperature up to 110 degrees Celsius.
- They have exceptional energy efficiency. Each YDST is estimated to reduce 27,423 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, equivalent to total emissions of 6,771 cars.
- They offer great flexibility with open design and options for electric- or steam-drive, meeting the different requirements of diverse applications.
As the manufacturer of the most comprehensive range of heat pumps in China, Johnson Controls provides waste heat recovery systems with capacities ranging from 1.8 megawatts to 100 megawatts, offering optimized solutions for diverse operating conditions. Besides the Titan™ and YDST, the company's broad product portfolio for waste heat recovery solutions include the CYK compound centrifugal chiller, YK centrifugal chiller as well as absorption chillers that use a unique two-step evaporator and absorber cycle.
Johnson Controls is committed to promoting the waste heat recovery technology, to meet China's energy restructuring goals. According to the "Implementation Plan of Providing Residential Heating by Waste Heat", coal-fired boilers in heating systems exceeding 2 billion square meters will be replaced with low-grade waste heat recovery solutions by the end of 2020, reducing coal consumption by more than 50 million tons. Energy restructuring and reducing coal consumption are key to improving China's air quality.
"The potential of waste heat recovery is huge in China as various sources of waste heat from industrial sectors such as power, steel, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, non-ferrous metals and sewage treatment remain untapped. Not only will waste heat recovery solutions benefit the environment, they can also dramatically reduce the operational costs for companies, and achieve economic efficiency," said Wu Song, Vice President and Managing Director of Johnson Controls Building Efficiency China. "The waste heat recovery equipment offered by Johnson Controls are designed to operate for over 25 years. Considering its energy saving benefits, the payback period of waste heat recovery equipment can be achieved within 10 to 15 percent of its total life span."
Johnson Controls was one of the first Energy-Saving Service Companies (ESCO) certified by the State Council of China in 2009, and was honored with the Special Contribution Award for Innovation (HVAC) and Technology & Innovation Award (HVAC) from the China Association of Building Energy Efficiency in 2015.
