DHL Delivers Record-holding 1930s Racecar to Its Asian Debut

HONG KONG, Oct. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — DHL Global Forwarding, a leading provider of air, sea and road freight services in Europe and Asia, today delivered the Napier Railton, one of the world's most renowned antique race cars, from its home in the United Kingdom to center stage at the Hong Kong Classic motor show.

Completed in 1933 for local racecar driver John Cobb, the Napier Railton's claim to fame was its 12-cylinder, 24-liter engine – the same type used by 1930s fighter planes – which saw it break numerous world speed records, including the Brooklands Outer Circuit Lap Record in 1935 which remains uncontested to this day. The car's heritage and special requirements, including the use of a unique petrol and lubricating oils specific to its age, made expert handling an utmost priority for DHL and the Hong Kong Classic's organizers.

"To successfully transport such a prized piece of racing history, you need both state-of-the-art capabilities for automotive delivery as well as, like the Napier Railton, a solid track record for getting highly delicate items to the finish line on time," said Kelvin Leung, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific. "Ensuring the integrity of such a delivery encompasses not just the car itself, but also a range of supply and maintenance needs that have to be accounted for the entire duration of the trip."

DHL transported the two-ton Napier Railton by road from its permanent exhibit at Brooklands Museum to Heathrow Airport, followed by a direct air service from London to Hong Kong and road transfer to Hong Kong's Central district. The Napier Railton joins more than 100 other vintage, experiment and concept cars and motorcycles at the Hong Kong Classic motor show.

"The Napier Railton's historical significance means it can only be allowed out of Britain for a maximum of three months at a time and requires time-critical transport in the fastest mode possible," said David Riach, Founder & Managing Director, Straight Six Automotive. "Ensuring swift yet faultless delivery of the car is crucial to meeting the high demand for this British treasure at motor shows and exhibitions worldwide, something which DHL has been instrumental in maintaining with the expert handling of the vehicle."

As the central exhibit at the Hong Kong Classic motor show, the Napier Railton will be on display from 9-11 October before being returned to Brooklands, UK by DHL.
