New Castrol marine lubricants: Enhanced TLX range launched
Castrol, a global leader in the lubricant industry and part of integrated energy major bp, has recently unveiled its newly revamped TLX product range, targeting medium speed four-stroke engines. This updated line is set to replace the previous Castrol TLX Xtra and TLX Plus fluids, offering broader compatibility with various engine types and applications while ensuring superior engine protection, reliability, and performance.
The Castrol TLX range has been meticulously crafted to address both current and anticipated needs of the industry. Notably, it supports a variety of fuel types for the marine industry, such as Heavy Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO), Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO), and is also well-suited for dual-fuel engines that operate on both residual fuel and gas. The versatility of the TLX range extends to its ability to perform efficiently for vessels transitioning between different fuels, particularly in Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) and part-time Emissions Control Areas.
Following extensive testing and field trials totaling more than 16,461 hours and achieving major OEM approvals, the TLX range has demonstrated robust performance under demanding conditions. It excels in environments with high sulphur fuel, low lubricant oil consumption, and small sump sizes by effectively removing contaminants such as oil sludge and water, thus maintaining optimal oil condition and safeguarding engines against corrosion and wear.
Eda Gökay, Global Marine and Energy marketing manager at Castrol, emphasised the strategic importance of lubricants in the industry, stating, “Lubricants are a lever of change as the industry strives to meet multi-tiered and complex regulations, an increased focus on health and safety, mounting demand for reduced downtime, and increasing engine performance amid new fuel and engine technology.” She highlighted the TLX range’s role in enhancing operational resilience and efficiency, as well as its compliance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) regulatory requirements.
The reformulated TLX range aligns with Castrol’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, integral to its PATH360 strategy. This approach aims to reduce carbon emissions, save waste, and improve lives through cutting-edge technology and premium quality products. The TLX range was made available starting April 2024 in Asia and Europe, followed by North America and other global markets.
Castrol’s continued innovation over its 125-year history underscores its dedication to evolving with market demands and advancing technologies within the marine sector. The company supports its products with comprehensive services, including Castrol’s LabCheck used oil analysis for optimising asset and vessel performance.
