Mitsubishi and ENEOS to advance SAF production in Japan
Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and ENEOS Corporation have partnered to conduct a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the ENEOS Wakayama Plant in Arida City, Japan. The facility, expected to begin production in fiscal year 2028, aims to produce approximately 300,000 tonnes (400,000 KL) of SAF annually, along with bio-naphtha and biodiesel as byproducts.
ENEOS, which has been evaluating the feasibility of this project since 2022, will leverage its sales network, refining technologies, and feedstock procurement capabilities. Mitsubishi will contribute its global expertise in sourcing feedstock, including used cooking oil, animal fat, and other waste products. By combining their strengths, the companies aim to accelerate the development of large-scale SAF production, supporting Japan’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The project supports Japan’s goal to replace 10% of aviation fuel with SAF by 2030, aligning with global decarbonization efforts such as CORSIA.
CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) is a global initiative by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) designed to reduce carbon emissions from international flights. It aims to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onward by requiring airlines to offset their CO2 emissions through approved environmental projects. CORSIA is part of broader global efforts to mitigate aviation’s impact on climate change, supporting the industry’s transition to more sustainable fuel options like SAF.
Advancing sustainability
This initiative aligns with both companies’ commitment to addressing climate change and promoting a circular economy. The project supports Mitsubishi’s corporate strategy of contributing to decarbonised societies and ENEOS’ efforts to reduce CO2 emissions through sustainable energy solutions.
