Kraton launches ISCC PLUS certified renewable solutions in U.S.

Kraton Corporation, a leading global producer of sustainable specialty polymers and high-value biobased products, has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts. The company’s manufacturing facility in Belpre, Ohio, U.S.A., has received ISCC PLUS certification, enabling it to produce up to 100% ISCC PLUS certified renewable Styrenic Block Copolymers (SBC) as part of the CirKular+™ ReNew Series using a mass balance approach.

This certification highlights Kraton’s dedication to advancing the circular economy. The Belpre facility joins Kraton’s Berre, France plant, which received its ISCC PLUS certification in 2021, in expanding the company’s capacity to produce certified renewable polymers.

Pedro Lopes, Kraton’s global VP of Strategic Marketing & Product Management, commented, “The certification of the Belpre site is an exciting milestone that further reinforces Kraton’s commitment to the circular economy and offers customers sustainable innovative solutions. Bringing local ISCC PLUS supply options to our customers will support their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and increase the use of renewable materials across multiple end uses.”

About the ISCC PLUS Certification

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an independent, multi-stakeholder initiative that employs a mass balance approach. This method tracks the amount of recycled or bio-based raw material in a value chain and attributes it based on verifiable bookkeeping to a given end product. This allows for a quantitative evaluation of the sustainability of materials and products. ISCC PLUS extends the ISCC system beyond biofuels and bioenergy to cover a wide range of sectors and applications, including food, feed, chemicals, and bio-based products.

The CirKular+ ReNew series

Kraton’s CirKular+ ReNew series, launched in 2020, integrates renewable materials and enables high-performance innovative solutions for the circular economy and plastics upcycling. These products help customers shift to renewable materials, improve product performance, reduce carbon footprint, and incorporate recycled plastics.

The ReNew Series can offer up to 100% certified renewable content with renewable butadiene, styrene, and isoprene. This series facilitates significant cradle-to-gate carbon footprint reduction compared to fossil-based products.

Commitment to sustainability

Kraton’s achievement with ISCC PLUS certification at its Belpre facility marks an important step in the company’s sustainability journey. By providing customers with access to renewable polymers, Kraton leverages its expertise and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities to create solutions that advance the circular economy. The company remains committed to supporting the transition to renewable materials, reducing carbon emissions, and enabling a more sustainable future.
