Virgin targets commercial production of aviation biofuel by 2014

Virgin Australia has set a goal to have in place a commercial-scale plant to turn eucalyptus trees into aviation biofuel by 2014. Virgin is partnering with Melbourne-based Renewable Oil Corp. and Canada’s Dynamotive Energy Systems to accomplish this. The company expects to have a demonstration unit operational by next year. “We believe this new project has great potential given the results with the technology and the availability of this unique Australian feedstock. It is also particularly attractive to Virgin Australia because it aligns with our commitment to supporting the Australian economy and environment, and encouraging Australian innovation,” said Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti.
