Vietnam to develop biodiesel from fish waste

In collaboration with the European Commission, a Finnish research center is developing the ENERFISH project to produce biodiesel from waste generated by a fish-processing plant in Vietnam. The project, propelled by European Union funding of more than €2.5 million (US$3.19 million) in cooperation with the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, will run from 2008 to 2011. Included among the project’s plans is to build a carbon dioxide-based cooling system and a specialized freezing system that will convert fish waste into biodiesel. The proposed cooling and freezing systems will be built at the Hiep Thanh Seafood JSC fish processing plant in southern Vietnam. (January 21, 2009)
