Toyota and BMW to conduct joint research on next-generation lithium ion batteries

Under a broadened partnership on fuel-efficient vehicles, Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp. will provide hybrid systems and fuel cell technology to Germany’s BMW AG. The agreement between the two companies was firmed up at the end of 2011, and paves the way for a joint research on next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Toyota said it is eager to join forces with other companies to encourage the use of hybrid systems, and last summer the company signed a joint development agreement with Ford Motor Co. Toyota also provides hybrid technologies to Mazda Motor Corp. and the new partnership with BMW secures its bases in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. The agreement with BMW also marks the first time that Japan’s top carmaker will provide a rival with its fuel cell technology. BMW on the other hand, will share its expertise in the development of strong, light materials like plastic, and in efficient processing technologies. The German automaker will also supply Toyota with 1.6- and 2-liter diesel engines. (June 25, 2012)
