Three-quarter-tank rule to stay
There are no plans to review the three-quarter-tank rule, which is part of Singapore’s policy to moderate vehicle usage and reduce traffic congestion, said Singapores Ministry of Finance (MOF). This was made clear even if some motorists have been calling for the rule, imposed on Singapore vehicles crossing into Malaysia, to be lifted. The ruling, which has been in place since 1991, requires northbound motorists to leave Singapore with petrol tanks at least three-quarters full. The ministry said the Government would not reduce duty on petrol as pump prices rise. The aim of the duty remains to promote the use of public transport and curb excessive use of cars, the MOF said. Duty on petrol in Singapore is levied on the volume of fuel bought: S$0.41 (US$0.30) for each liter of standard grade petrol. (June 10, 2008)
