Tanker drivers rob Caltex Woolworth stations of A$1 million worth of petrol
Tanker drivers of Scott’s Transport were caught siphoning off petrol collected from Caltex terminals at Silverwater and Banksmeadow, which were intended for delivery to Caltex Woolworth’s service stations in Sydney, Australia. The tanker drivers had been selling stolen petrol to low-cost rival stations at 50 cents (US$0.52) a liter. The scam went on for more than a year until Woolworth’s electronic tank monitoring system showed the discrepancies, which amounted to almost A$1 million (US$1.03 million) worth of E10 and premium Vortex 95 petrol.
Police investigations led to the filing of cases at the Parramatta Local Court against the erring drivers. It was revealed that the drivers were able to commit the fraud by disabling the GPS tracking systems on their tankers in violation of company rules and falsifying the hand-written paperwork. One trucker has already been tried and pleaded guilty to 24 counts of stealing as an employee between June 2011 and July 2012. Two other drivers will be brought to court in January.
