Solazyme's algae-derived fuel meets stringent testing for aviation use
U.S.-based Solazyme said it has produced the world’s first algae-derived jet fuel. Company officials said that its algae-based fuel has been tested by a leading U.S. fuel analysis laboratory and has passed 11 tests necessary to qualify for use in the aviation industry. Solazyme is a leading biotechnology company focused on synthetic biology for the renewable bioproduction of fuels, industrial oleochemicals, and health and wellness ingredients from marine microbes located in San Francisco, California. This is not like conventional biodiesel, where you can take french-fry grease from McDonald’s and turn it into oil in your garage, said Harrison Dillon, president and co-founder of Solazyme.
