Shell expanding base in China
Shell, known to Chinese consumers for its brand of lubricants, is looking to expand its presence in China’s energy sector. Haw Kuang Lim, executive chairman of Shell Companies in China, said the company was looking forward to more opportunities in China’s fast growing economy. Examples of Shell’s branding ventures in China include joint venture (JV) gasoline stations with Sinopec in East China’s Jiangsu province, JV service stations in Northwest China’s Shaanxi province and Southwest China’s Sichuan province. The company is also involved in gas exploration in China through the Changbei project, a joint venture with China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) in Shaanxi province. In addition, Shell is working to develop shale gas in Sichuan and coal-bed methane (CBM) in North China’s Shanxi. Lim states that Shell is looking to help China in addressing the country’s main requirements for energy. This includes assisting with energy supply security, environmental protection and emissions reduction. (June 7, 2011)
