Shell and Shanxi Coal embark on joint R&D

Shell and China’s Shanxi Coal Chemistry Institute recently signed an agreement for a joint research and development of a new technology related to coal gas transformation. The two sides will jointly improve the production process so as to transform synthesis coal gas to higher alcohols, which could be used as a substitute fuel or chemical product with high added value. Shell specializes in coal gasification technology, which has been applied to 19 coal chemical projects in China as a clean energy technology. This technology is essential for the production of substitute liquid fuel, which could be a good method for the clean use of coal and reducing dependence on oil resources. (December 2, 2008)
