Shanghai and Shanxi to test methanol-fueled vehicles

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has approved the pilot projects proposed by the Shanghai city authority and the provincial government of Shanxi. The pilot projects will encourage the use of methanol-fueled vehicles, and will initially involve 100–200 methanol-fueled taxis and government cars, which ply the streets of Taiyuan, Jinzhong and Shanghai.
Fuels based on 85% methanol and 100% methanol will be used in the vehicles in Shanghai and Shanxi. The Chinese government will choose which type of methanol-fueled vehicle to promote based on the results of the pilot projects. Shanxi province is aiming for 40 methanol-fueling stations.
