Philippine police cars to run on biofuels

The Metro Manila Police in the Philippines will soon use biofuel for its patrol cars. Earlier, National Police Chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. said the rising fuel prices has resulted in a drastic cut in the use of patrol cars by both the national headquarters and regional police offices. The biofuel program promoting the use of gasoline blended with ethanol from sugarcane or diesel mixed with used cooking oil in police cars, would generate big savings for the government and enable the police to cope with soaring fuel prices. National Capital Regional Police Chief Director Geary Barias said as soon as the Department of Science and Technology certification is released, his office would recommend the program to the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Currently, the Makati Police is already deploying vehicles that use a mix of diesel and fuel extracted from used cooking oil. (September 8, 2008)
