CALSTART welcomes new fuel efficiency standards for trucks, buses

The United States will implement rules requiring greater fuel efficiency for trucks and buses, the first of its kind in the world. The new standards will require new trucks and buses to meet a 10% to 15% reduction in fuel consumption and a 12% to 17% reduction in greenhouse gases. The new rules will drive innovation and encourage job creation, according to CALSTART, which represents more than 130 companies and operates as a catalyst for clean transportation technology. “Many companies in the United States have technology that not only can improve fuel economy in larger vehicles, but they are also globally competitive. These rules will encourage further investment in this sector and should drive job creation,” said John Boesel, president and CEO of CALSTART. Boesel added that U.S. firms have the capability to meet the new domestic standard and become global leaders. “These rules are not only a tremendous opportunity to reduce our reliance on oil, and do our share to prevent climate change, but will also stimulate investment and create economic growth in the United States,” he said. (August 9, 2011)
