Pertamina urges Indonesian government to build two more refineries

Indonesia needs to build at least two more oil refineries, each with a production capacity of 300 million barrels per stream day (mbsd), to meet half of its fuel oil needs until 2020, the news agency Antara reported.
A Pertamina official named Hano said that inspite of the additional two refineries, Indonesia will continue to be a net oil importer until 2025. He said that oil consumption in the transportation and industrial sectors will continue to increase, pushing demand up by 87% in 2025. That would require 135.2 million kiloliters, a big jump from the projected 72.3 million kiloliters in 2013.
To maintain the country’s national energy security, Hano said local crude oil production has to be increased. At a group discussion at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) campus, it was reiterated that there is a need for the government to manage the nation’s own energy resources. This would mean not extending importation contracts with foreign oil and gas companies. In response to the recommendations made at the discussion, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa, who is also an alumnus of ITB, said that he would follow-up the recommendations agreed upon at the meeting.
