OriginOil granted Australian patent for breakthrough algae harvesting technology

OriginOil, Inc. announced that the Australian patent office has granted it a patent for its algae harvesting technology, the first international patent it has received. OriginOil is a developer of the breakthrough energy process, which produces oil from algae. Patent number 2010239380 was issued for the invention titled “Systems, apparatus and methods of obtaining intracellular products and cellular mass and debris from algae and derivative products and process of use thereof.”
The patent, granted for a term of 20 years effective 2010, has been published in the United States, the European Union and Japan. Riggs Eckelberry, OriginOil CEO, stated that every patent filed and every patent granted is important to the company, because it increases the company’s value as a technology enterprise. Obtaining patents from foreign countries is crucial for OriginOil to secure its international presence and its leadership position in the algae industry, he added.

MBD Energy, OriginOil’s first customer in Australia, pioneered its Single Step Extraction ™ algae harvesting system in the country. As a support for algae producers and integrators to install, engineer and operate its OriginOil systems in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, the company has selected Frontline Engineering Australia, based in Melbourne, as its Certified Support Partner.

In a separate publication, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently said that OriginOil has applied for international patent for “Enhancing Algae Growth by Reducing Competing Microorganisms in a Growth Medium,” its 11th published application. Currently, WIPO is processing 29 OriginaOil patent applications for “Enhancing OriginOil”, 13 of which have been filed as international applications. (October 9, 2012)
