Northeast states in U.S. restrict sulfur content in heating oil

Several U.S. states in the northeast have begun to limit the amount of sulfur allowable in heating oil. New York has a mandate that restricts sulfur to 15 parts per million (ppm) in home heating oil. New York State consumes approximately 21% of the heating oil in the United States. New Jersey has also changed the air pollution control code for allowable sulfur in heating fuel to 500 ppm to be enforceable by July 1, 2014 and 15 ppm by July 1, 2016. Connecticut limited the amount of sulfur in heating oil in May 2010 when it made the amount of sulfur allowable in heating oil to 50 ppm by July 1, 2011 and 15 ppm by July 1, 2014. (July 28, 2011)
