No quick and easy fixes for cutting fuel use

Transport companies are examining ways to cut their fuel consumption ahead of the Federal Government’s carbon pollution reduction scheme and the threat of increased oil prices. TNT says that a fleet of hybrid trucks has cut its emissions by 14 percent, while Toll Holdings and LinFox have both introduced driver training programs to increase fuel efficiency. Toll has also joined the Government’s Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program. Citigroup analyst Elaine Prior says higher oil prices will impact the transport sector more than the CPRS. However, hopes of introducing new bio-fuels to the sector will be hindered by competition from the airline industry, according to Total Environment Centre policy officer Cameron Eren. (June 18, 2009)
