Nissan introduces car with carbon credits

Japans Nissan Motor Co. has released a car with carbon credits, becoming the first automaker in Japan to introduce a carbon-offset program linked to sales of vehicles. For each March Collet sold, credits for one ton of carbon will be transferred to the Japanese government’s account. The move is designed to help Japan cut greenhouse gas emissions by 6% from 1990 levels as pledged under the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012. The campaign “reflects Nissan’s holistic approach to address CO2 reduction at every level of its business operations,” the company said in a statement. Nissan will consider expanding the campaign to other models as the company is scheduled to stop selling the Collet in September, company officials said. (May 27, 2008)
