Nissan and Jatco develop more fuel efficient CVTs

Nissan Motor Co. and leading transmission manufacturer Jatco Ltd. said they have co-developed a next-generation continuously variable transmission (CVT) which is 10% more fuel efficient than current technology. Nissan plans to launch passenger vehicles using the technology from 2010. To create smooth acceleration from low to high speeds, conventional CVTs have required large pulleys and long metal belts to transmit power. Nissan and Jatco’s unique structure includes an additional gearbox, which results in smaller pulleys.
