New Zealand Energy Minister says developing a robust renewable energy sector not among priorities
During his appearance before the Commerce Select Committee, Energy Minister Phil Heatley confirmed that developing a robust renewable energy sector in New Zealand is not among the priorities of the National-led government.
“This vote of no confidence in the renewable energy sector will see more of our innovative companies heading overseas to countries with regimes that actively support and value their ideas,” said Labor’s energy spokesperson, Moana Mackey.
Mackey said that the recently released Renewables 2012 Global Status Report shows the New Zealand government lagging behind developed and developing countries in the world. The report also revealed that of the top 36 wealthiest countries in the world, New Zealand is the only country that has no renewable energy support policies.
“Support for biofuels is now non-existent and the possibility of a major gas find with the Government’s acceleration of exploration is a major threat to the economic viability of renewable electricity,” Mackey added. (June 14, 2012)
