New synthetic Delo 400 offers fuel economy improvements of up to 4.5%
Chevron Products Co. has launched a new brand of synthetic oil that will provide up to 4.5% fuel economy improvement in short-haul operations with a Class 6 truck, the company said.
According to Chevron, long-haul Class 8 trucks could see a 2% improvement with the Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30, when compared to an SAE 15W-40 reference oil in SAE J1321 fuel consumption testing.
The new oil is recommended for engines in which API CJ-4 or API SN service categories and SAE 5W-30 viscosity grades are recommended. The oil is designed to meet the demands of EGR and EGR/SCR engines, while also providing the highest levels of performance in other diesel engine technologies, it said.
“We understand that many of our customers are focused on managing fuel costs. Lubricants can play an important role in improving fuel economy, allowing fleet owners to reduce operating costs and stay competitive,” said Jim Gambill, North America Commercial and Industrial brand manager.
The oil offers cold-starting reliability, due to its low viscosity synthetic base stocks, while also protecting against wear and corrosion and helping extend diesel particulate filter life.
Chevron said internal testing showed wear levels and oil drains similar to those achieved with an SAE 15W-40 oil.
Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30, to be available in the fourth quarter, is formulated for use with low-sulfur and ultra low-sulfur diesel fuels, gasoline, most gasoline fuel blends, and many biofuel formulations.
