Murdoch University tests new technology to produce algae

Scientists at Murdoch University in northwest Australia are testing a new technology to create diesel fuel from oils produced by green algae. The algae were perfectly suited to the WA climate, meaning the state could become the world leader in algal biofuels if the project is successful, research leader Michael Borowitzka said. The algae could be a good feedstock for the production of bioethanol as it could be grown in tanks filled with seawater or saline groundwater in locations unsuitable for traditional farming. The challenge would be to set up supply lines for the product. (March 10, 2009)
