Mid-size push over compacts in Korea’s Top 10 list
The Toyota Prius Hybrid retained the top spot of the Korea Energy Management Corp.’s Top 10 list of fuel efficient cars, with a fuel efficiency rating of 29.2 kilometers per liter (kpl), but other compact models were replaced by mid-size models which are roomier, yet more fuel efficient. The hybrid Sonata and K5, which went on sale in May, ranked ninth and tenth respectively, replacing compact models in last year’s list. The two models, which can get 21 kpl, are fitted with the newly developed 2-liter Nu engine which allows 150 brake horsepower and a 30-kilowatt electrics. Hyundai and Kia said these vehiclesf electric motors are 18% smaller and 30% lighter than those of their rival models which use the same technology. Their clutch is designed such that both the engine and the electric motor are engaged when the car is traveling uphill or on highways. The South Korean government currently gives a tax incentive of 3.1 million won (US$2,835) when purchasing hybrid cars. (May 9, 2011)
