Maruti Suzuki showcases hybrid models

Maruti Suzuki showcased its hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) models to be used during the Commonwealth Games in Delhi to transport officials and athletes, reports the Hindu Business Line. The company has provided 10 SX4 hybrid models and four “Eco Charge” EVs to the Delhi government for trials during the event. The EV models have been developed as part of the government-initiated and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers-coordinated National Hybrid Propulsion Program (NHPP) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources’ (MNRE) High Energy Density Battery Development Program. There is yet to be an official announcement from Maruti Suzuki on a commercial launch date for the models in India. Given the higher price points of hybrids and the range limitations of EVs, it is likely that the government would have to introduce a significant program of tax breaks and incentives to encourage the commercialization of the technologies in India.
