Malaysia to implement Euro 2M in August
Implementation of Euro 2M fuel specifications, Malaysia’s version of Euro II, will begin in August, government officials said, to prepare for the country’s full switch to the said standard on September 1. Responding to the decree, oil companies said they will phase out 92 RON at their respective terminals and will soon start importing 95 RON gasoline, which is expected to take 70 to 75% of the total gasoline market share. Malaysia’s domestic refineries are also geared up to produce 95 RON gasoline, but the impact on total imports is still unclear. Petronas Dagangan Bhd, the publicly-listed marketing arm of state-run Petronas, said that its new gasoline, Petronas Primax 95, which recently went on sale at service stations in two Malaysian precincts, is fully compliant with Malaysia’s Euro 2M. Boustead Petroleum Malaysia Sdn Bhd (BHPetrol) carried out a soft launch of 95 RON gasoline at one service station in Kuala Lumpur in mid-July, in preparation for its introduction on a country-wide basis on September 1.
