Major fire breaks out at IOC’s Hazira terminal in Gujarat

Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. (IOC) reported that a major fire broke out at its Hazira terminal in Gujarat on January 5, where two contractors working in the terminal were killed. The casualties were identified as Raisingh Choudhary, 38, and
Rahul Prasad, 20.

The next day, the company said that the fire, which broke out in the Motor Spirit (MS) tank of IOC’s bulk storage terminal, had been fully contained. The Hazira terminal has five gasoline and four diesel storage tanks. The blaze started in a gasoline tank that contained almost half of its 12,000-kiloliter capacity petrol; the fire then spread to another gasoline tank as it was fanned by the winds.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Veerappa Moily who visited the site, estimated the damage to IOC to be around Rs 450 million (US$8.4 million). The company said a high level investigation of the incident was being conducted by an internal committee which was expected to submit its report in three weeks. (January 8, 2013)
