Maersk to have 10 new triple-E class ships built by Daewoo
Triple E Class stands for economy of scale, energy efficiency and environmentally improved. These are the buzzwords behind the new ships to be built for the Maersk shipping line by Korea’s Daewoo Ship-building & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. The company’s media advisor said these new ships will entirely change the shipping industry’s understanding of size and efficiency. The new container vessels will not only set a new benchmark for size, but also for fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions per container moved. At 400 meters in length, 59 meters in width and 73 meters in height, these ships will be the largest of any vessel of any class on the water today. The current largest container vessel in the world is the Emma Maersk. These new container ships will be able to hold 2,500 containers, which is 16% higher than the Emma Maersk. The cost of each vessel will be US$190 million. (March 4, 2011)
