Maersk takes the lead in developing fuels from waste
Bloomberg reported that Maersk A/S, the biggest container ship owner in the world, has taken the lead in developing biofuels from organic waste with the intent of lessening the company’s carbon emissions and reducing a US$6 billion-a-year fuel bill. Maersk is collaborating with companies such as Man Diesel & Turbo SE and two Danish universities for the development of clean fuels that will be suited for ships. The company had previously worked with the U.S. Navy and tested fuel produced from algae. “The beauty of biofuels is that they work with the engines as they are today,” said Jacob Sterling, Maersk’s head of climate and environment. “There is a very, very strong link between reducing emissions and reducing costs.” (February 22, 2012)
