Lufthansa commences renewable fuel project

Deutsche Lufthansa AG, which was supposed to begin using renewable fuels in a regular route between Hamburg and Frankfurt in April, will now commence the program in July. The three-month delay in conducting the first biofuel flight was due to a wait for authorization, according to a company spokesperson. A blend of renewable jet fuel and standard jet fuel will be used on one engine of the Airbus A321 aircraft, while the other engine will be supplied by conventional jet fuel. The experiment will look at whether using biofuel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and examine the effects of the biofuel blend on maintenance and engine life. (July 8, 2011)
